Environmental Test Capabilities

Climatic testing

It is not always sufficient to carry out climatic tests individually, because environments occur in combination in the real world. Our specialist facilities provide the ability to simulate combinations such as temperature, pressure and vibration or to vibrate at temperature extremes from -55˚C to +135˚C. Whatever the conditions, the environmental laboratory is able to simulate a range of natural and induced environmental conditions that are likely to be encountered anywhere on land, at sea or in the air.

Conditions and test cycles defined in national and international specifications can be simulated, including:

  • Solar radiation heating
  • Humidity
  • High temperature
  • Low temperature
  • Salt mist and sea spray
  • Fluid contamination
  • Rain/water spray
  • Fine mist
  • Low air pressure (altitude)

Sustained acceleration

Sustained acceleration testing is carried out in a temperature-controlled centrifuge. Test items up to 7kg can be accommodated including slip rings to allow signals to be exchanged and power to be applied. Accelerations of up to 100g can be applied at temperatures of between -55˚C and +85˚C.

Acoustic testing

A unique Acoustic Test Facility provides the capability for simulating acoustic noise, Reliability Growth and Reliability Demonstration. The facility consists of a reverberation chamber with hydraulic shakers and a thermal conditioning shroud (-50˚C to +100˚C) which offers:

  • Acoustic Noise Testing to DEF STAN 00-35 where specific acoustic spectrum is required
  • Maximum Sound Pressure Level 165dB, (reference 20 μPa)
  • Acoustic Spectrum Range :- 40Hz to 20kHz

Vibration, shock & bump testing

The laboratory maintains thirteen electromagnetic shaker systems that range from 16kN to 89kN thrust rating. They are employed to conduct vibration, bump and shock tests. Eight of the shakers can be configured as pairs for testing long or awkward items. Slip tables are also available for testing in all axes.

Structural & fatigue testing

The structures laboratory gives us the capability to perform structural and fatigue testing on a wide range of structures and assemblies. We can design test rigs to provide complex multiple loading at extremes of temperature to match the most severe environments. Our facilities allow us to perform fatigue tests for both high cycle (forced vibration) and low cycle (static load cycling) fatigue conditions which we can combine in blocks to synthesise the real usage and fatigue environment of the structure. We can deliver:

  • Static loads up to 160kN
  • Dynamic loads up to 160kN at 30Hz
  • Combined loads with extremes of temperature
  • High Speed data logging 500 channels /second
  • Moment of Inertia and C of G determination
  • Strain Gauge application
  • Mechanical rig design
